Topic 1: People attending college or university for many different reasons (for example, new experiences, career preparation, increased knowledge). Why do you think people attend college or university? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

University is the institution at the highest level of education. Becoming a student of university is always among one of the highest aspirations of almost every student all over the world. There are many reasons why people are interested in enrolling in university, namely, for the sake of better career preparation, new experiences, or more extensive knowledge in a specific major, etc.

In the first place, from my point of view, people go to university in order to have a better preparation for their future career. It is an indisputable fact that entering into university would give you more advantages over other applicants for a decent job when the competition for jobs is more and more fierce nowadays. University is an ideal place for you to acquire knowledge of a specific major. Through a wide range of subjects at university, students are provided with the necessary skills which help them perform well in their professions. For example, if you are a student of Faculty of Business Administration, you will be provided a wide range of knowledge relating to management, marketing, etc. which serve for your future job. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the knowledge you gain from the school is not enough to ensure of a worthwhile job in the future. To be successful in future career, you also need to accumulate experiences as well as acquire a lot of transferable skills in the real life.

The second reason for people attending university and college is due to the desire for new experiences. Entering a university means turning over a new leaf of life. The study environment in the university is strikingly different from that at high school. You now have your own choice of what, when, and how long to study, thanks to the flexibility of the education policy which allows students to have greater autonomy in the choices of curriculum. The second difference lies in the amount of time you spend for self-studying. To perform well in the exam, it is essential that you be more proactive in studying, which means spending more time on reading the reference books, preparing carefully for the lessons in advance. Correspondingly, university is well equipped with the modern facilities such as multifunctional libraries, reading rooms, which provide students with the ideal environment for studying. One more thing that distinguishes university from high school is the new sense of freedom and independence. There is now no teacher keeping an eye on you. It is your choice to study hard or lazily, attend class regularly or play truant. Your study result will depend on your own determination.

Last but by no means least, in my opinion, students apply for a university because they want to fulfill their insatiable desires of knowledge. Knowledge here is not only the abstract theory from books but also the broader vision you gain through many social relationships you have in the university. University adds more dimensions to your life, which has implications for not only your time at university but also your future.

In conclusion, university is an important step into the future life. However, I would like to stress that it is not crucial for you to gain a university degree to lead a successful life. There are many other ways for you to prepare for your life. Nevertheless, as far as I am concerned, studying in a university is really an interesting and valuable experience. If you have a burning ambition of being a university student, try your level best and you will deserve to enjoy the wonderful feelings that being a student brings you.
